Hughes Elementary

Hughes Elementary School was built in 1927 and has been a focal point in the community. The original name for Hughes Elementary was the, “Essexville Public School” and it served students in grades K-9. The staff consisted of principal Cecil Hughes and seven teachers.

Many physical changes have taken place since 1927. The school has seen one major addition to the original building. Several classrooms, a cafeteria and a library were added in 1949. Since passage of a special millage in 1992, walls, electrical wiring, plumbing, lockers, lavatories and doors have been upgraded. A bond issue was passed in March of 1997 and more renovations were made. These include Internet access, a library/media center, a physically handicapped access ramp and elevator, renovation of the gymnasium and stage, air conditioning, paving and fencing.

There have also been a number of changes in curriculum over the years. Today, students have four computers in every classroom and access to a lab with 30 computers and a laser printer. Staff and students make use of a wide variety of equipment such as digital cameras, data projectors, document cameras, and electronic whiteboards. Software programs such as “Accelerated Reader”, “Accelerated Math”, and “Microsoft Office” are also used.

Each of the buildings in the district has enjoyed great deal of parental support and involvement over the years. The Hughes Parent Council has volunteered many hours and had many fundraising projects. These projects have allowed for the purchase of items such as a mural in the cafeteria, additional playground equipment, and the Hughes sign in front of the building.
